Minnesota is working to identify and replace all lead service lines statewide by 2033. The DMU team is in the process of checking each of our customers’ lines for lead. If we determine that your line may need replacement, we will contact you with the next steps. If you do hear from us, there is no need to worry. This does not mean there is an immediate problem with your drinking water.
Learn more about Minnesota’s Lead Service Line Replacement Program.
A service line is a pipe that connects the water main to your home or building’s plumbing. If a service line contains lead components, it is considered a lead service line. Some lead service lines in the United States were galvanized with protective coatings, but these should still be replaced. Homes built after 1985 do not contain lead in their service lines.
The Minnesota Department of Health and the University of Minnesota have provided this interactive map that displays service line material by address. You can check your address to see if your line may need replacement. More addresses will be added regularly, so check back frequently if you don’t see yours right now. DMU will also contact you if your line may need replacement.
