Scholarship Opportunity for Utility Students in MN

Attention students! The Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association (MMUA) is now accepting applications for the 2025 Utility Workforce Scholarship. This funding is available to students of all ages who are interested in joining the utility workforce or enhancing their skills within it, including current utility professionals.

Up to five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to individuals who enroll in a utility-related career program at an eligible institution. Applications are open to students seeking credentials for a variety of utility-specific roles, including the following:

  • Lineworker
  • Gas operator
  • Wastewater operator
  • Phone broadband technician
  • GIS technician
  • Utility engineer
  • Utility manager

Students may be working toward a college degree, certification, professional license, or another similar credential for these roles.

How to Apply

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must:

  • Live in Minnesota
  • Complete the online application
  • Answer two open-ended questions in 500 words or less:
    • Why does becoming a utility worker in your chosen field seem right for you? How did you become interested in the role you will be seeking?
    • What can you tell us about your knowledge of the utility sector and municipal utilities in particular?
  • Provide two letters of recommendation from an employer, a teacher, or a mentor

The deadline to apply is May 15, 2025.
