Delano Municipal Utilities (DMU) is seeking to hire a Senior Accountant. This position is responsible for DMU’s financial operations and promotes sound fiscal stewardship through accurate financial reporting, analysis, and forecasting. Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or another related field with a minimum of 5 to 7 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, demonstrating increasing responsibility and technical expertise. Position Summary

The Senior Accountant oversees DMU’s financial operations and promotes sound fiscal stewardship through accurate financial reporting, analysis, and forecasting. This position ensures the accuracy and timeliness of financial information and supports informed decision-making by the General Manager and Commission.

Essential Functions of the Position

• Provide oversight and backup support for accounts payable, accounts receivable, utility billing, inventory accounting, and other financial functions as needed
• Manage company payroll by accurately processing employee pay, maintaining payroll records, and ensuring regulatory compliance
• Lead month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and cost allocations
• Prepare monthly and annual financial statements, including financial reports with variance analysis
• Support annual budgets, long-range financial planning, and rolling forecasts through detailed financial analysis and cash flow monitoring
• Monitor financial performance, analyze key trends and variances, and recommend corrective actions as needed
• Prepare audit schedules and coordinate with external auditors
• Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies
• Prepare financial reporting that complies with state and federal requirements
• Prepare tax returns and oversee strategies to minimize tax liabilities
• Work with General Manager to ensure adequate insurance coverage, while overseeing property damage and other insurance claims

Experience & Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or another related field 
• Minimum 5 to 7 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, demonstrating increasing responsibility and technical expertise 

Preferred Experience

• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and capital expenditure planning 
• Experience with external audit processes 
• Utility experience preferred 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough understanding of accounting principles and internal controls 
• Knowledge of cash management, debt management, and financial planning 
• Strong forecasting, budgeting, and financial modeling skills 
• Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy 
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines 
• Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities 
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
• Proficiency with Excel and accounting/financial software(s)

Compensation & Benefits Summary

Salary Range: $40.86 - $57.69 hourly / $85,00 - $120,000 annually
